Custom sites take a little longer, roughly three to four months, because the whole site is built from scratch. Treat these as rough estimates. They shift with how involved your own team is along the way.

It moves with the choice between a template and a custom design, with how complex the functionality is, with the size of the site and its information architecture, with how much content has to be written, and with whether logo and branding assets have to be created too. Web design is the process of planning and building your website's structure and appearance. Structure creates the order that lets visitors reach the information they need. Appearance is about colors, fonts and images. Web design puts user experience (UX) and usability first.

Web design moves through three layers: structure, interface and code. The structure layer decides how pages connect to one another and in what order a visitor meets them. That is information architecture, and it comes before any visual work. The interface layer settles color, type, spacing and components into a system. Instead of drawing pages one by one you build a repeating language, so the site does not fall apart as it grows. The code layer carries that language into the browser. What matters there is not only visual fidelity: load speed, behavior on mobile and whether a search engine can read the page are all decided at this layer. Breaking the order is expensive. Changing the information architecture of a page that is already coded costs almost as much as starting over.

Either can be right, and the dividing line is not budget but the job the site has to do. A template is a reasonable start for sites whose content structure is standard and whose difference from competitors rests on content rather than visuals: it goes live sooner and its upkeep is predictable. Custom design becomes necessary when the site itself is a sales instrument. Product explanation, calculators, multi-step forms or integrations with outside systems hit the limits of a template quickly. There is a practical measure: count the steps a visitor has to complete on the site, and ask whether those steps are specific to your industry. If they are, a template cannot carry them.
