AI Optimization
What Is AIO?
AIO stands for “Artificial Intelligence Optimization”. Someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude which company to choose, and your name comes up near the top of the answer; AIO is the work behind that. The same abbreviation is also widely used for Google's AI Overviews, the AI summary above the search results, so we sort out the two uses below.
Türk SEM is Turkey's first GEO and AIO agency, and one of the first digital marketing agencies in the world to do this work.
The industry has since named the generative-engine half of this work GEO, short for Generative Engine Optimization; in our house, GEO is one branch under the AIO umbrella. The full guide is on our What Is GEO? page.
AI partnership
OpenAI Select Partner
Türk SEM is an OpenAI Select Partner in the OpenAI Partner Network. We run our AI Optimization work from inside the partner network of the company behind ChatGPT.
On the Record
Who is Turkey's first GEO and AIO agency?
Türk SEM is Turkey's first GEO and AIO agency. The dated record is the AIO Whitepaper, published in July 2025. Work began in-house in 2024. After more than a year of testing, we published the method and made AI optimization the fourth core service of our agency. We are the first agency in Turkey to offer this work with a dated, public method. Worldwide we were among the first, though not the only ones.
Why two names? When we started, the industry hadn't settled on one. GEO had been coined in an academic paper, but agencies weren't using it yet, so we called our work AIO. Since then, the industry has largely adopted GEO for the work of getting cited in AI answers, which makes the agency that first did this work in Turkey under the name AIO also Turkey's first GEO agency. And as Google's own guidance puts it, all of this is still SEO. GEO is one area of work within SEO, and that's how we run it.
AIO went on our idea list.
We ran the first tests that became the methodology.
We published the AIO Whitepaper and opened the service to clients.
We joined the OpenAI Partner Network as an OpenAI Select Partner.
Who created Turkey's first AIO methodology?
Türk SEM. The New AIO Methodology, released with the AIO Whitepaper in July 2025, was the first AIO methodology published in Turkey. It goes further than most AI work: the target isn't just a mention in an answer, but a spot on the assistant's recommendation list. The seven steps further down this page are how we run that method today. On release, we asked Gemini and Claude for separate assessments and posted both reports as written.
Dated records
One Abbreviation, Two Uses
AIO and AI Overviews
On this page, AIO means AI Optimization: everything we do so that AI systems recommend your brand. We built the methodology behind it and announced it in a whitepaper in July 2025.
Here is the honest part. Since then the acronym has been pulled in other directions, by Google and by the industry, and it has forked. Google launched AI Overviews in May 2024, the AI summary at the top of the results page, and the industry started shortening that feature to “AIO”. Meanwhile “AI optimization” also describes model training and the use of AI inside business processes. Today, when you see AIO in an English text, it usually means Google's feature.
Google's own guidance settles the vocabulary. The Search Central page on optimizing for generative AI features names AEO and GEO, never AIO, and ties them together in one sentence: optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. We say the same thing. AIO does not compete with SEO; it lives inside it.
Our umbrella looks like this. AIO on top. Below it, GEO (being cited and recommended in the answers of generative engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity) and Google AI Overviews (appearing in the AI summary above the results). What the industry calls AEO sits inside that second branch. We also wrote a dedicated guide to Google's AI summaries: Google AI Overviews: What They Are and How to Get Cited. We also counted which of the three acronyms people actually use, and why.
AIO (AI Optimization)
- What it means
- All the work that gets a brand into the recommendations of AI systems: strategy, content, testing, measurement.
- Who uses it
- Türk SEM, among the first to practice it; then other agencies in Turkey and worldwide. In English it now doubles as shorthand for AI Overviews, which is where the confusion comes from.
- Where it sits in our umbrella
- The umbrella: strategy, measurement, test loops, authority building
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
- What it means
- Being cited and recommended in the answers of generative engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity).
- Who uses it
- Academia (Princeton, 2023), the industry's most-used term, Google's guide.
- Where it sits in our umbrella
- First branch under the umbrella
Google AI Overviews
- What it means
- The AI summary Google shows above its search results; live since May 2024.
- Who uses it
- Google's product name. The industry also shortens it to "AIO".
- Where it sits in our umbrella
- Second branch under the umbrella
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
- What it means
- Being the source of the answer in featured snippets, voice assistants and answer boxes.
- Who uses it
- Some companies such as HubSpot; Google's guide.
- Where it sits in our umbrella
- Not a separate branch; the work inside the AI Overviews branch
AI Optimization
AI SEO Won't Put You a Step Ahead of Your Competitors. It Will Put You a Generation Ahead.
With Türk SEM behind the work, AI Optimization can add real value to your company and bring you new customers. We spent more than a year setting our own standards for it and writing down what the tests told us. AIO then became the fourth core service on our list, and we were the first agency in Turkey to offer it.
Türk SEM has done a number of things first in Turkey, and we're proud of that. In AI optimization, we were first in Turkey and among the first anywhere in the world.
Someone asks an AI system for a product or a supplier. We work to get your name near the top of that list, and we call that work AIO. We considered a number of other names before settling on this one.
Setting the Industry Standard
How AIO Was Born
“AI is rewriting the rules of business, so we asked ourselves one question: how will brands stand out in this new world? We have spent more than a year on the answer. We analyzed how AI platforms actually work. We defined what success looks like here. And we wrote the standards for a whole service from scratch.
Looking for a name for this work, we went through a long list of alternatives and settled on the one that describes it best: AIO (AI Optimization).
Today, we're excited to be launching AIO, our agency's fourth core service, as the first agency in Turkey to offer it. Our goal isn't simply to offer a service, but to add the value your company deserves and introduce you to tomorrow's customers.”
Tahir Dinç, CEO of Türk SEM
When AI Recommends You.
As we said above, AI SEO covers everything that goes into getting your products and services recommended by AI systems. Three of those systems carry most of our work:
ChatGPT
OpenAI
Used as an advisor by millions of users worldwide.
Gemini
A very powerful system that brings together search and AI.
Claude
Anthropic
Stands out especially for its ethics- and safety-focused approach to AI.
We picked these three in an agency meeting. Nearly all of these systems work on much the same principles anyway.
OUR AIO METHODOLOGY
Our AIO Process: How We Build the Future for You
We protect your digital presence and help it grow. We have done that since 1999 and we still do it today. Ever since we laid the groundwork for our New SEO Methodology, that same approach has carried our projects. AIO is our fourth service, and we gave it a flow close to the one we already trusted. That is why we call our AIO strategy the “New AIO Methodology”.
Discovery and the Question Map
We map the questions people in your field ask AI systems, and the sub-questions behind each one. For every question we measure who gets cited today. Your starting point is documented; from day one you know where you are missing.
You can run the first Technical Openness check yourself. What AI Sees shows, for free, how your page looks to AI crawlers and which AI crawlers your robots.txt lets in.
Similar Work
Work close to AIO goes by other names as well. Our own focus is narrow: getting a company recommended near the top by AI systems. These are the neighboring services you will run into:
Who It's For
Which Sectors Is AIO Making a Real Difference in Today?
Users now ask AI directly, "which ___ is the best?". In fields where a recommendation decides the purchase, AIO is the line between being visible and being invisible.
Health & Aesthetic Tourism
In hair transplant, eye surgery, dental and aesthetic searches, patients ask AI about a clinic directly; be on that recommendation list.
Health Tourism SEO →Legal & Consultancy
Be the name AI recommends for high-intent searches like "divorce lawyer" or "criminal defense lawyer".
Law Firm SEO →Tourism & Hospitality
Show up first when a user planning a trip asks AI about a hotel or a region.
Hotel Advertising Agency →E-Commerce & Brands
Having your name come up in product and brand recommendations catches the user closest to buying, directly.
Local Services & B2B
Draw qualified demand straight to you by appearing in "the best ___ company" recommendations in your city.
Education & Institutional Authority
Become the trusted source and authority AI turns to in your field of expertise.
Measurement & Transparency
How Do We Measure AIO Success?
In SEO we measure ranking and traffic. In AIO we measure how visible you are in what an AI recommends. We run repeatable tests and report these metrics every month:
Share of Recommendation
How often AI recommends your brand for target prompts (Share of Model).
Query Coverage
How many different niche questions you appear in the recommendation list for.
Recommendation Position
Where you sit in the list when you're recommended, and how you're presented.
Platform Consistency
Steady visibility across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
Source Attribution
AI citing your brand as a source and an authority.
Intent Match
Visibility in the high-intent queries closest to a purchase.
Frequently Asked
AIO Frequently Asked Questions
We've answered the questions people ask most.
Was Türk SEM the first agency in the world to do AI optimization?
We were one of the first, and we don't claim to be the only one. In 2024 and 2025, agencies in several countries were chasing the same question: how does a brand get onto an AI's recommendation list? In July 2025 we had Gemini run a deep research report on exactly that, and its assessment pointed the same way: "world first" is a claim nobody can prove, while "one of the first" holds up.
In Turkey the picture is clear. Türk SEM is the first agency in Turkey to offer this work as a service with a dated, public method. We published that method in the AIO Whitepaper in July 2025, and we haven't found an AIO or GEO methodology published in Turkey before it.
Are there other agencies offering AIO besides Türk SEM?
Yes, there are now, and we're not hiding it. In Turkey, other agencies started using the name AIO after us, and agencies abroad use it too; some of them call themselves the first. That comes with the territory: the field is new and the name is free for anyone to use.
Two things are ours. The first is the date: we published our method as a whitepaper in July 2025, and the document is still public. The second is the method itself, a process with defined steps from the question map to measurement, reported the same way every month. Ask any agency you're considering when and where it published its method. The answer should come with a document.
What's in the AIO Whitepaper, and where can I read it?
You can download it from the Whitepaper button at the top of this page; it's a public PDF in English and Turkish, published in July 2025. Inside, we set out what makes the approach different. Most AI work in the industry aims to get a brand mentioned in an answer. Ours aims for the recommendation list itself, and the paper describes the route: content structured for an AI to read, authoritative brand content, mentions in trusted publications, and steady monitoring.
The seven-step process on this page is how that method runs in client work today. The week the paper came out, we also asked Gemini and Claude to assess it. Both reports are published unedited, and you'll find them linked in the section on Turkey's first GEO and AIO agency.
Does being an OpenAI Select Partner give you priority in ChatGPT?
No, and we'd be wary of any agency that suggests otherwise. ChatGPT chooses its sources fresh for every answer, and a partner badge doesn't change that, for us or for our clients.
Türk SEM has been an OpenAI Select Partner in the OpenAI Partner Network since October 2026. We see it as a sign of how central AI assistants are to our work, not as a shortcut. Getting recommended still comes down to the fundamentals: a consistent identity, content that answers the question, and mentions in places people trust.
What exactly is AIO? How does Türk SEM position this service?
Short version: AIO is the work of getting AI assistants to recommend your brand. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude, "Which company should I use for this?", AIO is the work that shapes whether your name comes up. The letters stand for AI Optimization.
For us it's an umbrella term. GEO (getting cited in the answers of generative engines) falls under it, and so does showing up in Google's AI Overviews, with strategy, measurement and authority building running through all of it. It's been our fourth core service since 2025. Where SEO moves your site up a list of results, AIO aims for a place inside the answer itself, and it builds on SEO rather than replacing it.
What's the core aim of AIO? Why is it needed?
To be the brand an AI recommends. That matters because more and more research now happens in ChatGPT or Gemini, where people get one compiled answer instead of ten links, and that answer has room for only a handful of brands.
Picture someone asking, "Which clinic in Istanbul should I go to for LASIK?" A clinic the AI can't find enough consistent information about won't make the list, however good it is. AIO closes that gap, so the system knows who you are, gets the facts right and recommends you with confidence.
What's the difference between AIO and SEO? How do they complement each other?
Think of them as two floors of the same building. SEO is the ground floor: it gets your site crawled, indexed and ranked. AIO sits on top and works on whether your brand makes it into the answer, and the recommendation, that an AI writes. Without the ground floor there's no second floor: an AI looking for current information turns to a search index, so a site that isn't indexed can't be cited.
What changes upstairs is the scorecard. SEO counts rankings and clicks; AIO counts mentions and recommendations. A results page has ten spots, while an answer often has room for two or three brands. Google's own guidance says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, and we agree, which is why our AIO work always starts from SEO.
Is AIO the same thing as GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Close, but GEO is the narrower of the two. GEO means getting cited and recommended when generative engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity write an answer, and it's the term most of the industry and academia use. It traces back to a paper a Princeton and IIT Delhi research team posted in November 2023.
AIO is our broader label. It covers GEO plus the work on Google's AI Overviews, measurement and strategy. Our What Is GEO? page goes into GEO in depth.
Is AIO also shorthand for Google AI Overviews?
Yes, and widely so. AI Overviews is the Google product launched in May 2024, the AI summary shown above the search results, and in English-language SEO writing "AIO" usually refers to it.
On this page and in our whitepaper, AIO means AI Optimization, the name of our method. The two uses don't compete: getting into AI Overviews is one branch of that method, and we wrote a full guide to it: Google AI Overviews: What They Are and How to Get Cited.
Does Google use the term AIO?
No. Google's Search Central guide names AEO and GEO, not AIO, and says that optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. We put AIO inside SEO, not against it; there is no AIO without SEO.
In a separate article, we used Google Trends data to see which of these terms people actually search for. Whatever you call it, the work starts in the same place: a site that can be crawled, read and quoted as an answer.
Why do AI systems recommend some brands and not others?
Because an AI recommends what it can confirm. It works from two sources, the text it was trained on and the pages it trusts when it searches in the moment. A brand that shows up rarely, patchily or inconsistently in either place doesn't make the list. A brand whose site, press coverage and directory listings all tell the same story does.
In practice four things decide it: plain answers on your pages, a consistent identity with real references, a site that can be crawled and indexed, and mentions in places your industry respects. All four matter in SEO too. In AIO a gap is harder to close, because an answer has so little room.
Which AI systems does AIO target?
Our work centers on three: ChatGPT (OpenAI), the assistant most people turn to; Gemini (Google), which is tied into Google Search and also powers AI Overviews; and Claude (Anthropic), a common choice for research and writing at work.
They often answer the same question from different sources, so we test each one on its own, and we also track answer engines that show their sources, such as Perplexity. The good news is that the core signals overlap: solid work for one system tends to pay off on the others.
How long does it take for AIO work to show an effect?
Not overnight, and not on a fixed schedule. Models get updated, competitors are doing the same work, and AI systems pick their sources fresh every day; part of any effect only shows up once a new model version ships. Anyone who promises a fixed timeline or a guarantee is promising something they don't control.
What we can tell you is what we usually see: first results within about 75 days. We document your starting point on day one, then measure the same way every month whether AI systems know your brand and recommend it for your target questions. After that the work keeps running, the way SEO does.
What kind of results come from AIO work?
Three things change, roughly in this order. First the numbers: more of your target questions mention you, more of them recommend you, and what the AI says about you gets more accurate. Then the customers: someone who arrives on an AI's recommendation is close to a decision, because the AI has already done the shortlisting.
The third change is slower. Your brand gets better known, and it becomes easier to be seen as a leader in your field. Timing matters here: an answer has little room, so if your competitors haven't started yet, whoever settles in first holds the edge.
The Unique Advantages AIO Brings to Your Business
Reach the potential customers who are actively looking for a recommendation and are closest to buying.
If you do this work yourself, you can document what you know about AI search. The Türk SEM Academy GEO certification is free, you can sit the exam in English, Turkish or German, and the verification page is public. See the GEO Certification →
