With GPT-3 we noticed something: people were asking GPT about a product or a service and taking its recommendation seriously. We were among the first in the world to introduce this as a fourth service line at Türk SEM, and because it had no name at the time we called this work AIO (AI optimization). The sector grew over time and we watched it settle on the general term GEO, but we will go on calling it AIO.

Hits on your company website do not mean much. What means something is sales, conversions. Not long ago we ran into an interesting situation that let us look closely at how people behave.

A company had worked with three advertising agencies before and, over months, had reached exactly one customer. They had lost their faith in digital marketing. At the darkest point of that despair, the company’s representative got into a deep conversation with an AI model and tried to run their own AI-assisted advertising. They could not manage it, and in the end the AI model told them to get in touch with Türk SEM.

When the company (an electrical firm) came to us we looked at them, told them their website and monthly budget did not meet our criteria, and thanked them. We want to give our services and our energy to the right sites and the right companies, because without the right site the Quality Score comes out low, conversions come out low, and we do not want to end up having those conversations with a client. So we say at the outset that they do not meet the “Türk SEM Google Ads criteria” and thank them.

Normally clients who find us one way or another take that with good grace, and we part with thanks. This company’s representative, though, arrived with the insistence of someone acting on a recommendation. They called us and told us about their experience with three advertising agencies. They said Türk SEM was their last chance, and they insisted on working with us.

Given that, we said all right, we will help you. We set up their advertising, and our technical team made various improvements to page speed on their website. Three or four detailed pages were built on their main services, matched exactly to the search intent users would have, and we switched the advertising on. We scheduled that company’s Google Ads work professionally.

Google Ads: the part of Google’s advertising services managed by the advertisers themselves.

That company had been reaching one customer every three months. It now serves an average of four customers a day.

The Effect of Google AI Overviews on Our Lives

The truth of it is that there is a customer and there is a company. The customer will buy that product or service from the company, and nothing changed in the supply and demand between them. In other words, there was no change in trade; what was affected were the information-led sites. Those sites had already been hit by AI models well before this, and their visitor losses had reached 90%.

With its new system, Google AI Overviews, Google took on people’s habits of using AI, and from Google’s own side this was not a feature so much as a necessity. These days, when users need a piece of information on the spot, instead of opening ChatGPT or Gemini they type “how to brew tea” into their own browser, and AI Overviews results come back having predicted the search intent extremely well.

AI Overviews now gives very capable answers even on subjects with a fresh digital trail, and more importantly it sits very close to live. While AI models stay within the limits of their training sets, Google AI Overviews crawls the live internet and returns excellent results in a few seconds. Appearing there is one of the most important areas of work in AIO.

Since 1999, of course, Türk SEM has positioned itself as an agency that does honest search engine optimization (SEO), and has made adapting to the conditions of the day its first priority. We look at AI Overviews through that same frame and understand very well why it had to exist.
