There is one basic lesson you forgot to prepare yourself for. Your university education is not the last link in the chain or the final source of what you know, you will keep learning more and more, because learning is a development process that never stops.

So what should you do to succeed as an engineering student?

Here are a few tips that will guide you for the rest of your life.

Full Command of English

You probably think you already know English. What we mean here is speaking the language in full. You are the one who has to open a conversation with the person across from you and keep it going. Put your backpack on and go talk to people in other countries, in other cultures.

Work on Your Goals

You will always draw inspiration from an ambition or a goal. What you need is motivation pointed at the goal you set. Reach your best self through short term goals, day by day. Long term goals are what will keep you motivated to work every single day.

Look for New Challenges

If you never challenge yourself, nobody will ever learn what you are capable of and where you fall short, including you. To move forward in your career you have to stay willing to take on new and difficult projects. Right now, as a student, looks like the best time there is to build an independent project.

That project journey will help you make the best possible decision about the role you want. Unless you challenge yourself to learn about different fields, you cannot define what your real passion in engineering is.

Never Pause Your Professional Development

Do not think your education ends the day you graduate. You must have heard it many times over that learning is a process without an end. For better opportunities you should always be chasing new knowledge. Engineering is an enormous field and learning all of it in one lifetime is impossible. So decide on a subject that interests you, gather knowledge from a range of sources and start becoming an expert in that area. Looking into certificate programs also seems like a good idea. Here are a few places you can take one.

Keep Yourself Up to Date With What Is New

Engineering and innovation are two different words that are siblings. Somewhere in the world, somebody is always working on a new technology. Remember, inspiration is everywhere.

Which means you have to follow engineering innovation news and academic papers. Follow the details of new technologies and how they get applied, for the sake of your own growth ahead. Improve Your Communication Skills

Work on how you speak and how you communicate, because those are the things that carry you where you want to go. Getting better at everyday and professional communication will serve you at every turn. The best and most innovative ideas in the world never make it past the drawing board if they are not communicated well. And today the vast majority of technical communication between team members and management happens over email, which is a form of writing.

Accept Both Positive and Negative Feedback

To grow you need to know where you fall short and put in the work to fix it. Positive reviews encourage your work and help you stay motivated.

Once you are serious about your own progress, negative feedback is always useful. Finding your weakest point and strengthening it can be the key to your success. The same holds for whatever project you happen to be building.

Try to Work on Your Management Skills

Engineering may be the field you were trained in, but if you want to accomplish something bigger, developing management skills matters a great deal.

That is the path that can make you a head of product, a team lead or a project manager. Management skills also teach you teamwork and how to manage the balance between your work and your life.

Take a Lesson From Your Mistakes

Student or professional, nobody is perfect and making mistakes is normal. If you do not fixate on the mistake and you keep learning something new, it reflects positively on your future.

Pick Your Mentor

In your university days you had a favorite faculty member you could ask for guidance. Once you step into professional life you need a mentor beside you as well. It can be anyone: your manager, your team lead or an experienced colleague.
