SSL Analysis & Certificate Guide

Examine your site's SSL certificate in depth; if something is wrong, find out exactly why and how to fix it, step by step.

SSL Certificate Types

Every SSL certificate encrypts with the same strength; what differs is how deeply the certificate authority verified your identity and how many domains it covers. Analyse your domain to see which type you have.

DV / OV / EV

Three layers of trust, by level of validation.

Wildcard

Every subdomain under a single certificate.

Multi-Domain (SAN)

Separate domains on one certificate.

Choosing correctly

Which one your type of site needs, below.

Domain Validated (DV)

Low validation

The CA verifies only ownership of the domain (via a DNS record or email). Issued within minutes and usually free (Let's Encrypt).

Advantage: Fast and free; the encryption strength is identical to the others.

Best suited to: Blogs, personal sites, portfolios and small business sites that collect no sensitive data.

Organization Validated (OV)

Medium validation

Alongside the domain, the organization's legal existence is verified and the company name appears in the certificate details. Validation takes a few days and the certificate is paid.

Advantage: Shows visitors the site belongs to a legitimate business.

Best suited to: E-commerce, corporate sites, and platforms that collect information through logins or forms.

Extended Validation (EV)

High validation

The strictest legal and operational review. It used to turn the address bar green; modern browsers have removed that visual, but the certificate still carries the strongest proof of identity in its details.

Advantage: Maximum corporate trust and the strongest distinction against phishing.

Best suited to: Banks, financial institutions, large e-commerce and organizations handling sensitive transactions.

Wildcard SSL

Scope: every subdomain

In the form *.example.com, a single certificate protects all first-level subdomains of a domain (blog., shop., mail. and so on).

Advantage: Manage many subdomains with one certificate and one renewal.

Best suited to: Sites with many subdomains, SaaS dashboards and multi-region corporate setups.

Multi-Domain (SAN)

Scope: several domains

The Subject Alternative Name field combines different domains (example.com, example.net, anothersite.com) on a single certificate.

Advantage: Gathers separate brands and domains onto one certificate, saving management effort and cost.

Best suited to: Organisations running several domains, and Microsoft 365/Exchange environments.
