Another factor Google has not shied away from naming among the things that affect ranking is how long pages take to load. It has said that the opening process feeds into ranking algorithmically on both the mobile side and the desktop side, and at the same time that users lean towards visiting sites again when those sites open quickly. On that point it published a page about “PageSpeed”, meaning page speed, so that website builders would have a source to work from.

We cannot say page speed matters enough to form the basis of how you are listed. But a user friendly interface that opens quickly can be one of the reasons you build for an existing visitor to come back. That is why we have to take the opening speed of our site seriously. Heavy sites with a lot of photographs, and above all sites with unoptimised photographs, may never reach the levels they want in the rankings. A mobile user on an Edge connection, meaning a low bandwidth one, may in particular run into trouble reaching the page and leave without making any use of the content. In that case the effect on the SEO process is a negative one.

Note : You can run the mobile friendliness test on your site right now.

What Will You Meet in the PageSpeed Test?

You will meet two separate sets of advice, one for mobile and one for desktop. They go through the development work you need to do on your web page for a faster web experience.

  • Field data (Core Web Vitals)
The first section, which tells you whether the page passes the threshold using data gathered from real users. If this section does not pass, that is the place to fix first.
  • Improvement suggestions
These are advisory and they are ordered by the estimated saving. Fixing them contributes to the load time and to the mobile view.
  • Passed audits
A collapsed section listing the audits the page already passes.
