We wanted to write a piece on what topical authority means for a site and what you can do to make your own site an authority on its subject. Read this one all the way through; you may find lines of work that give your site some ideas.

What Is Topical Authority and Why Is It Critical for SEO?

Topical authority is the perception of deep knowledge, expertise and trustworthiness that a person, an organization or a website holds on a particular subject or field. It is built by producing comprehensive, quality content on that subject, backing it with supporting evidence and references, engaging with the other authorities in the sector, and generally becoming known as a reliable source on the topic.

  • Expertise and accumulated knowledge: having deep knowledge and experience in a particular field.
    A Turkish example: Doviz.com
  • Trustworthiness: earned by grounding the information you present in accurate, current, reliable sources.
    A Turkish example: Kariyer.net
  • Recognition: being a source that gets cited, respected and followed on the subject.
    A Turkish example: Sahibinden.com

Choosing the Right Niche and Analyzing Your Audience

There is usually no easy road to success. Content lost its meaning through sheer volume before, and now we are living through a period where web software is losing its meaning too. If you are asking “if both content and software are losing their meaning, how do we get anywhere?”, this piece walks through it carefully.

Your site’s field has to cross with your own expertise. At Türk SEM we see people coming to us who have built a site in a sector they have nothing to do with, purely because there is serious money in it. That will not produce healthy results. Our first piece of advice is to know the sector your site is in.

Topical authority

Building a Content Architecture on the Pillar and Cluster Model

What Is Pillar Content?

Pillar content, or a content pillar, is a comprehensive, authoritative piece covering a broad subject on your site in depth. It acts as a hub for a set of related pieces (blog posts, videos, infographics and so on) that handle the more specific subtopics.

  • Breadth: it covers a broad subject in outline along with its important subtopics. The aim is to give the reader a basic understanding of the subject.
  • Authority: it calls for deep research and expertise. By offering reliable information, it aims to build authority on the topic.
  • A hub: it links out to the other pieces covering related, more specific subtopics (cluster content). Those pieces link back to the pillar in turn. That structure is called topic clustering.
  • Long form: generally long texts, comprehensive guides, ebooks, or the detailed pieces people call an “ultimate guide”.
  • Evergreen: it carries fundamental, lasting information that largely holds up over time.

To take examples from our own site, turksem.com, these are the pieces;

Our digital marketing agency has offered SEO and Google Ads solutions for many years. In 2022, with software engineer Celal Dinç, we started offering web design as well. Those 3 pieces are our example of a pillar content structure.

Producing Comprehensive, Deep, E-E-A-T Focused Content

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness

E-E-A-T is the backbone of our SEO work. Because; if you cannot become the authority in your field, the quality of return on all the other SEO work drops. You have to put your experience on the table and be the first to share some of the critical material.

Whoever wrote your content, show it with a WordPress author box plugin. That brings real advantages. The reader sees the expertise of the person who wrote the piece and the credibility of the writing goes up.

Authority builds over time. It grows as people quote your site on the subject or share you. Do not forget it takes time.

Trustworthiness is about presentation, and it goes as far as showing your sources in what you write. It stands for the bond of trust between you and the reader.

Strengthening Topic Connections Through Strategic Internal Linking

Pillar content forms the skeleton of your site. The pieces below it should support the main content, and the rest of your content should link into those pillars. Internal links matter a great deal; they are how you map out how completely and how broadly a topic is covered. Internal links count for “link juice” as well.

Consistency, Continuity, Currency and Managing the Content Calendar

Your content has to be consistent: if one page says the company was founded in 1995, another should not say 2005. Content that carries no logical contradictions matters a great deal. To become the authority in your own field you need continuity alongside consistency. Sharing developments in your sector as they happen counts for a lot.

Continuity naturally keeps your site current, and every new current piece makes you that bit more authoritative.

Publishing on a regular rhythm is the healthiest approach. Twenty pieces one month and nothing the next will not work. Set your content calendar and spread the pieces across the right dates.

The Role of PPC in Building Topical Authority

As we said at the top, on the road to authority the effect of original software or original content in 2025 and after is not what it was around 2010. It still matters enormously, it is still essential, but those two alone are not enough. Running PPC, Google Ads in particular, brings real benefits for brand recognition. Social media advertising counts too. We run campaigns for our own brand on X from time to time.

Through our agency you can also advertise on portals that reach a substantial audience in Turkey, such as Turkuvaz Medya and Ekşi Sözlük. Portals of that weight strengthen how your brand is perceived and widen its reach.

What YouTube and Instagram Do

Every channel matters in becoming a topical authority, but 2 of them sit ahead of the rest: YouTube and Instagram. Take every piece you publish, make videos and reels for both platforms, and reach people that way. It strengthens your topical authority. LinkedIn, TikTok and the other channels matter too, of course, but YouTube and Instagram come first.

Get Into the Academic Journals

Carry out academic research or reviews and publish them. Research done properly generally brings your brand real advantages. Appearing in academic journals can move you forward quickly in your own sector.
