Around 2001, when the craze for opening a search engine had not yet run out in the world and SEO work did not even have a name, external links were what decided the whole process. The more sites that linked to you, the further forward you placed, and the more successful you counted in the eyes of the search engines. How good it is that this has changed.

Between 2001 and 2005 SEO was one dimensional. It was the reign of the external link. In the years 2006 to 2009 the new system came into play, and Google penalized every portal that wanted to abuse its system, small or large, without distinction. Sandbox may be a student program these days, but at the time it was a dark cloud and it had affected the whole internet.

Build Your Own Intuition

Intuition is a very powerful thing, more powerful than intellect, in my opinion.”
Steve Jobs

Intuition. In SEO, intuition is one of the fundamental components. Since the day Google said “quality content is king”, we can say we invented the idea of an SEO philosophy. And that idea of a philosophy sits squarely in the content. While we build content we should trust our intuition and give the reader more than the content they asked for. Do not think of this component as text alone, intuition holds everything.

Take New York Miami plane ticket as our basic query. Say we design a page about it. We give the timetables, the ticket prices and the rest of the classic information, so how do we work our own originality into it? We could add a box for the change in weather over the period of the flight and let people know about the change they are going to live through. Something like an information box saying “it is going to get 7 degrees colder, try to dress more warmly.” What kind of information and services the person running that search will need is intuition. In short:

Quality content built with successful intuition is king.

What Do People Want?

Let Panda come, or Penguin, or the Polar Bear, if you have built “the best content for the word or the phrase people are searching for” you will always get a positive result. If the user typed “shoe price”, you need to give that user plenty of priced shoes and get them interacting with the site. If you are writing 500 pages on the history of the shoe and applying the “content is king” logic magnificently, you will not get a ranking. In other words: “content built with successful intuition is king.” Give visitors what they want. The first questions we ask in SEO work are these:

  • Define your customers
  • Define the sets they have in common
  • Define your target audience

You can, you should, and if you're brave enough to start, you will.
