One effect Google has not shied away from stating in its own notes is that country extensions bring a real SEO advantage. In other words, domains with a country extension gain an advantage in searches inside their own country. On search queries run through Google.com.tr, domains with the “.tr” extension issued through TRABIS at the Turkish regulator BTK hold the advantage. Talking about the same advantage in international searches, though, is difficult. Since 14 September 2022, .tr domains have been issued through BTK's TRABIS system, by way of accredited registrars. Before that date the allocation was run by Nic.tr at Middle East Technical University. You can follow the allocation rules through Nic.tr and buy the domain from an accredited registrar.

If You Are Building a Site in Several Languages, Do Not Use the “.tr” Extension

For companies that export, our most important advice is this: if their own web page carries a name like companyname.com.tr, that name has a hard time coming up on queries in other languages. Unless the site serves content of a very high grade, Google tries not to bring those extensions into its search results. So you might aim to rank in the United Kingdom with a subdomain named “uk.companyname.com.tr”. And that is exactly where it becomes rather hard, because of your site name in the first place.

Work in a new market has to start out with good planning. The domain extension matters a great deal, but there are a good many variables besides.

Domains with the .tr extension in the search results

Which of the .tr Extensions Can You Choose?

  1. Com.tr
  2. Gen.tr
  3. Name.tr
  4. Web.tr
  5. Net.tr
  6. Biz.tr
  7. Info.tr

The extensions above are free to use. Some important application documents may be required on purchase, though. The Name.tr, Gen.tr and Web.tr extensions are entirely free to buy. First come, first served is the logic that works here. When you take a domain with a .tr extension, you have started your SEO work +1 step ahead.
