Google has become such a common part of our lives that it turned into a verb. When we talk about the internet we no longer say “look it up”, we say “google it”. It is a good day to learn a little more about the search engine that is the backbone of our SEO work.

Do not be surprised if one day the word “search” is replaced by “google” altogether.

As it happens, 77% of average internet users check Google at least 3 times a day to look something up online.

Until that day comes, here is something interesting and useful to know: how many people use Google a day?

Let us find out.

How Google Search Grew Over the Years

We have grown so used to Google that we forget it was not always there beside us.

Google started out in 1998.

Let us look at how it “grew up” as the years passed.

  • In 1998 Google was taking an average of 10,000 queries a day.
  • In his book “The Search”, John Battelle reported that in the month of August alone Google was handling 3 million searches a day. We can assume the figures were similar in the other months of 1999.
  • According to Google’s 2001 Zeitgeist report, Google saw more than 150 million queries a day.
  • Google’s founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page were taking 200 million queries a day before they filed for their $2.7 billion public offering in 2004.

Have a look at this too: How Many Websites Are There in the World?

Google does not give us exact figures for the years between 2005 and 2008. Instead, the 2005 year end Zeitgeist says Google handled “billions of search queries”.

  • In an official blog post from 2010 introducing Google Instant, Google said that before Instant it was “serving more than one billion searches a day”.
  • For 2012 Google said it was handling 100 billion searches a month, which works out at more than 3 billion a day.

Google again tells us little for 2013 and 2014, and for 2015 it simply repeats the older statistics.

  • In the second quarter of 2021 the most popular search query on Google was “Google” itself, followed by “YouTube” at 88% and Facebook at 85%.

How Many Users Does Google Have?

So how many people use Google?

When we say “Google” we usually mean the search engine.

But Google as a company has more than 270 products, and 7 of them have 1 billion users or more.

And yes, the search engine is definitely one of them.

  • Estimates put Google today at roughly 8 billion searches a day, or about 95,000 a second.

Conclusion

Getting exact figures out of Google is very hard, but what we do have is staggering enough. These statistics are on the cautious side, so the real numbers may well be larger in every direction.

Google shows no sign of slowing down.
