How the calculation works
- 1The keyword family is builtWe expand the core you typed into its variants. Nobody advertises on one keyword; the real budget comes from the whole family.
- 2Unadvertisable searches are droppedJob listings, salary and research searches stay out. Advertising on them burns money, so we show you what we dropped and why.
- 3The keywords that carry the budget are keptWhat remains is ranked by search volume times cost per click, and we keep the slice that carries the weight of the budget. Searches with a low click price usually carry no commercial value.
- 4The monthly cost is worked outYou set how much of those searches turn into your clicks with the slider, and the monthly cost follows from that share.
This is an estimate, not a bill
The tool gives you a baseline: roughly what a business advertising on these keywords would spend in a month. Your real spend can land below or above it, because Google Ads is not a fixed price service but a live auction.
- Click prices are not fixedEvery search runs its own auction. Click prices move as competitors change their bids, as new advertisers join and as the season turns. The figures here are averages from the moment they were measured.
- Quality Score changes your bill directlyGoogle ranks ads on quality as well as bid. The more your ad matches the search and the better the page behind it, the less you pay for the same position.
- Seasons swing the numbersIn months when demand climbs, both search volume and click prices rise with it. An annual average does not describe any single month's bill.
- Your ad will not show on every searchBudget, bid and Quality Score decide how often you appear. The slider stands for exactly that share, and you only learn its real value inside your own account.
- The real number arrives after launchA campaign's true cost is read from your own data in Google Ads after a few weeks on air. This calculation guides you until then, and gives way to real data afterwards.
Common questions
- Why are the amounts in dollars?
- The data source reports click costs in dollars. We do not bake an exchange rate into the page, because a rate that changes daily would be wrong by tomorrow. Your actual bill is charged in your account currency.
- Is the slider a click-through rate?
- No. In Google Ads, click-through rate is clicks divided by impressions. This figure is clicks divided by SEARCHES. Because your ad does not appear on every search, this number is your impression share multiplied by your click-through rate.
- What changes between local and nationwide?
- Local narrows the searches to the city you picked and keeps neighboring cities out of the sum. Nationwide removes that filter, so the keyword family grows and the budget grows with it.
- Is this the exact bill?
- No, it is a baseline. Your real bill moves with your Quality Score, what competitors bid and how often your ad actually shows.
